Sikhs came to Northern Ireland around 1950s. During this time about 5-6 families moved to Northern Ireland from Punjab in India. The population then grew with time. The population had a mix of business and professional Sikhs.
The families settled here by carrying out door to door selling of clothes. These involved taking orders and meeting the demand of their customers. They got the items from wholesale markets in Belfast and selling them further and making profits. Then around 1970 market trades started all over NI whereby majority of Sikh population earned their living.
The Belfast Gurdwara was established in 2002 after Housing executive recognised the needs of the population of Sikhs in Northern Ireland and provided the Sikh community with a house to establish a Sikh Community Association. The Sikh population has now grown to about 40 families and mostly living in and around Belfast. Although majority of the population of Sikhs still live in Midlands.
Presently Northern Ireland population has a mix of Professional and Business Sikhs.
